We all know the routine. We start by saying, ‘I’m gonna do it this year.’ And if we’re really detailed, we may even make a plan. And we’re really motivated at first, and we might do the first day, the second, but then what happens?

We put it off til the weekend, procrastinate and drag our feet and finally, we tuck the goal into the graveyard with all the goals of the past. But this is not the end of the Goal Setting Cycle. No.

The next part of the cycle is that we get excited again about the same goal – or another one, and then when we go to set another goal – we get visitations from the ghosts of goals past, ‘you’re just lazy, undisciplined,’ ‘what makes you think you’ll do it this time?’ echoes in our head.

And so we defeat ourselves even before we get started.
