Are Goals Keeping You On A Hamster Wheel?Do you feel like you are chasing the same goals over and over?

Do you feel like your life is spinning on a hamster wheel?

Often we pick goals that keep us on a hamster wheel, chasing the goal with our time and energy and we end up working against ourselves.

Think of your goals for this year. What do you want to create in your life? What would make your life amazing?

In the typical goal setting process, we pick something we want and that becomes the goal. And if we are savvy, we might even break it down into a SMART goal – making Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and on a Timeline. And if we are really serious about it this time, we might even break it down into action steps and put it in the planner.

And then we try to stick to the plan. And we might be really good for the first week or so. But then a few more days roll by and we start to procrastinate, I’ll do it tomorrow or other things just come up.

The problem with the typical goal setting process is that we often hold ourselves hostage with our goals without knowing it.

We put off our happiness ‘til someday. “Someday when I have the new car…the bigger house…I’m thinner…then I will be happy…then I will feel successful…then I will feel good about myself.”

But if you look a little closer at your desires, you’ll find hidden messages that you can decode by asking the magic question, ‘what will that get for me?’

Let me tell you a story about Anna. Anna was a 40 plus sales professional and single mom. She came to me with the goal of advancing her career and making more money.

“What is your goal?” I asked Anna.

“I want to make more money,” she replied.

“And what would that get for you?” I asked.

“I could take my son to Disneyland.” she said.

“And what would that get for you?” I asked.

“I’ll enjoy quality time with my son,” she said.

“And what will that get for you?” I asked.

“I’ll have a better relationship with my son,” she said.

If Anna were to try just tackling the goal, she may spend more time at work and have less time with her son.  She may find more money, but ultimately feel unsatisfied, because what she really wanted wasn’t the money, she really wanted the higher feeling behind the goal- more quality time with her son.

And she didn’t have to go to Disneyland to have that, she could have that in her life now.

These higher feelings behind the goal are messages from your deeper self about how to live a deeper, richer, fuller life now.

Write out your goals and keep asking yourself ‘what will that get for me?’ and look for the higher feelings attached.

We often hold ourselves hostage by our goals, thinking, ‘someday, when I make enough money, then I can relax and enjoy life…then I will be happy.’ But we don’t have to wait until we’ve completed the goal, we can have the feeling now. What small step can you take to have the higher feeling in your life now?
