Our Memories Shape Our Reality: Where did your passions come from?
Our experiences through life shape our beliefs, the lenses through which we see ourselves and the possibilities around us. Our perspectives in life are largely from our experiences. Our brain stores our memories in the grand archives of the mind, how we see life is largely formed from these beliefs.
A question was asked, if I weren’t working in my field, what would I be doing instead? As I thought about it, it would probably be something in nature and adventure.
Where did I first learn a love for wild things?
I think my deep love for nature first started with watching my dad charm wild animals. He truly had a gift. We had property in Southern Idaho, where hot springs were piped through a greenhouse keeping plants growing all year. A pair of Great Horned Owls would always come nest at the property. It was a clear spring day and we watched as an owlett tried flying, but fell out in the meadow. My dad said, “come with me” and I followed him out to where the owl crash landed.
We could see the owlett, hissing and puffing out its feathers, it was quite fierce and fiesty. My dad began talking to it, quietly, calmly, after a couple minutes, the owl cocked its head to the side as if listening, got this dopey look and folded up its wings.
My dad slowly moved in, ever so slowly, still talking to the owlett. My dad offered his arm (covered in a leather glove) out to the baby flyer. The owl without hesitation jumped up on his arm. We got up from the field, walked back to the greenhouse with the baby owl as an observer for the day. We all got to hold the owl on our arm carting it around.
At the end of the day, my dad returned the youngling to the nesting tree and its siblings. These were some of the remarkable experiences where I saw my dad with this magical gift as an animal charmer. It was the beginning of recognizing a deeper connection to the world around us.
I like to think that he passed on some of this inexplainable nature magic to me, though its been a long time since I’ve had an experience like this.
For many of us having a healthy diet of nature and relaxation in our lives is a key to maintaining our balance, our happiness and the quality of our lives.
Think about the things in life that really add to the quality of your life and being, how much time are you giving those activities? What time can you set aside for those things that recharge you and bring you joy?
Whatever you love in life~ make time to relish in it!
On the positive side of life, our memories are a treasure trove of experiences of love, connection, happiness and adventure. On the negative side, we can also have things that haunt us. As I came to the field of NLP and Hypnotherapy, and cleaned out the ghosts of my past, however painful, it was always better on the other side.
May you cherish your positive memories. And if you need help in unhooking the negative memories that cast a shadow over your life, my door is always open in Salt Lake City or the online world.
